Introduction
Gift List Guru (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the website giftlist.guru, the Gift List Guru Android app and the Gift List Guru Chrome extension (together, the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
Information we collect
Account information
When you sign up, we collect your name, email address, and profile picture from your Google account or the email address you use to sign in via magic link. This is used solely to identify your account and enable sharing features.
Gift lists and items
We store the gift lists you create, including list titles, occasion dates, interests, descriptions, and the gift items you add (names, URLs, and images) — and, when you make a list for someone else, their first name and interests. This data is necessary to provide the core service.
Sharing data
When you share a list, we store the email addresses of the people you share with and their reservation status. We send email notifications to these addresses on your behalf. If you tell the other guests you're getting a gift that isn't on the list, we store what it is so they can see it (not who's getting it) — the list's owner never can, unless the list was made for someone else (a child, say): then its owners can see who reserved what and the notes you chose to share, and the list tells you so before you reserve.
Notifications
If you turn on notifications, we store the delivery address your phone or browser gives us for that device, so we can send them. Turning them off in Preferences, or in your device's settings, stops them. To show you what's changed on a list since your last visit, we also keep a note of the gifts you saw when you last opened it.
Gift finder
When you describe someone to our gift finder (for example “my sister, 30, loves yoga”), the words you type are sent to Anthropic, our AI provider, so it can understand them and choose gifts from our catalogue. You don't need to use names. What you type isn't saved to your account unless you choose to save it as your interests. To answer a repeated question instantly, we keep a copy of the question and its suggestions for up to 30 days, not linked to your account.
Chrome extension
The Gift List Guru Chrome extension reads the title, URL, and main image of the web page you are viewing, but only when you actively click the extension icon. This data is sent to our servers solely to add the item to your gift list. The extension stores a single authentication token locally on your device. We do not collect browsing history, track your activity, or access any page data without your explicit action.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the Service is used. This collects anonymised usage data such as pages visited, time on site, and device type. No personally identifiable information is shared with Google Analytics.
How we use your information
- → To provide, maintain, and improve the Service
- → To send email notifications when lists are shared with you or gift items are reserved or removed
- → To email you, at most every couple of days, when gifts are added to a list you have opened or a reserved gift on it becomes available again — every such email has a link to stop them, and they can be switched off in Preferences
- → To send notifications to devices where you have turned them on — when people join your lists or your guests have been busy (never what they did), before an occasion on a list you're on, and when gifts are added — each kind can be switched off in Preferences
- → To suggest gift ideas based on the interests you provide, or what you type into the gift finder
- → To display relevant products from our retail partners via affiliate links
- → To understand how the Service is used and to fix issues
Affiliate links and product suggestions
Gift suggestions and product browsing features may include affiliate links. When you click through and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps fund the Service. Product data is sourced from our retail partners and displayed within the app. We do not sell your personal data to advertisers or third parties.
Data sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only in the following limited circumstances:
- → With people you share lists with — they can see the list title, items, and occasion date. They cannot see your email address unless you share it directly. Signed-in guests can also get gift ideas beyond the list, based on your first name, the list's note and the gifts on it — never your interests, which only shape your own suggestions.
- → Service providers — we use Vercel (hosting), Neon (database), Resend (email delivery), Google (authentication), Anthropic (AI — the gift finder and product descriptions; it doesn't use what we send to train its models, and deletes it within 30 days), and OpenWebNinja (Amazon product data — we send it search words such as interests, never your name or email). Notifications you turn on are delivered by your device maker's or browser's push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla), encrypted so they can't read them. These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy policies.
- → Legal requirements — we may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
Data retention
We retain your account data and gift lists for as long as your account is active. Archived lists and items are retained for historical reference unless you delete them. If you delete your account, all associated data (lists, items, shares, reservations, off-list gift notes, and email aliases) will be permanently removed.
You can delete your account yourself at any time from the bottom of your Preferences page, or ask us to do it for you — see giftlist.guru/delete-account.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- → Access the personal data we hold about you
- → Request correction of inaccurate data
- → Request deletion of your data
- → Object to or restrict processing of your data
- → Request a portable copy of your data

Cookies
We use essential cookies to keep you signed in. With your permission, we also use analytics cookies (Google Analytics) to understand how the Service is used, and marketing cookies (Google Ads and the Meta/Facebook Pixel) to measure how our advertising performs and show you more relevant ads. Analytics and marketing cookies stay off until you accept them, and you can change your choice at any time from the cookie settings link in the footer.
Children
The Service is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you via the Service or by email. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
